Can I be sure campers are adequately supervised?

Absolutely. The Presbytery's Committee on Camp Lackawanna, which oversees the summer camping program, carefully recruits capable, creative, and energetic pastors and lay people who volunteer as adult Program Directors for our camps. Campers are directly supervised by responsible, young adult counselors throughout their daily activities and during cabin times. A professional and nurturing Camp Nurse also volunteers and lives on site each week.

Summer Program staffers are selected for their love of working with children and youth, their strong and well articulated Christian Faith, and their past experience in camping leadership. The maximum counselor to camper ratio is 1 counselor per 6 campers. The paid staff also includes several operations personnel: a certified Life Guard, Arts & Crafts Director, Cook, and Kitchen Staff, Office Assistant and a Maintenance Coordinator. A Staff In Training Program (SIT) provides for up to two volunteer senior high school students who serve on staff for each camp.

Pre-camp training develops staff members' unique contributions and strengthens program and group leadership skills. Lorie Loughney, Presbytery's Associate for Camp and Christian Ed, lives on site during the summer camping sessions.

How are cabin assignments made?

Our Program Directors make the cabin assignments, taking into account the campers' ages and hometowns. They try to honor cabin mate requests, when possible. Campers must request cabin mates on their registration forms, and requests must be reciprocal (campers must request each other). Generally, we cannot accommodate any cabin-mate groups larger than three.

There are many camps to choose for my children. Why should I consider Camp Lackawanna?

Secular camps such as Band camps and Specialty Sports camps can be good experiences too, but Camp Lackawanna is designed to provide a setting where Christian faith can be joyfully experienced and nurtured through study, recreation and fellowship. Our programs offer a chance to live, play, worship and serve together in Christian Community.

Our program nurtures a commitment to God and to the church. The curriculum is planned to supplement the Christian Education efforts of parents and local congregations.

According to recent national research about children's ministry, our response to the personal value of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is usually determined by age 18. Most adults carry out the beliefs they embraced when the were young. Camp Lackawanna can significantly impact our children's moral and spiritual development.

What are the camp facilities like?

Camp Lackawanna is located in the heart of the Endless Mountains, about two miles from Vosburg, PA. Our camp is adorned by the beautiful Susquehanna River along about a mile of its boundary. Facilities include a 30' x 60' swimming pool, picnic pavilion, a lodge-style dining hall, a fire circle, an amphitheater, and an outdoor chapel to enhance worship in this natural setting. Three open fields allow for sports and recreation, and the pristine wooded areas are perfect for hiking and exploring the natural outdoors. On-site campers sleep on bunk beds in screened, open-air cabins.
