Camp Lackawanna is a ministry of the Presbytery of Lackawanna of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Published in Nov. 1, 1999 issue of "Lackawanna Connector"

There is a sixth grader in our Presbytery who took to heart the lessons of vespers and began to read his Bible, cover to cover. Having worked his way through Deuteronomy, he is still at it, determined to complete his goal.

There is a junior high school student who decided to join her friend's church after attending M*A*D* (Music, Arts & Drama) Camp this summer because the fellowship made her realize that she did not want to "miss out" on church life, a relationship with the "body of Christ."

One of our smaller churches was blessed with a scholarship fund this year that was provided by a former camper who wanted to give something back because his experiences and his memories are treasures to him.

We don't often hear the story of how a week at church camp plays out in "real" life, but when we do, we are encouraged and challenged not only to continue, but to improve this vital and unique camping ministry.

Lackawanna 500There are always stories of fun and fellowship and the moments of profound spiritual truth that seem to be the common experience for everyone who is involved.

Friday night Nascar Races on an indoor track (with hand decorated cardboard box race cars) ... Talent nights with skits so funny you cry ... Singing joyfully around the campfires, relishing the old favorites and learning to sing a new song ("this is not your mother's Kum By Yah!")...

In addition to a loving, exuberant, hard working and terrific summer staff, the Camp Lackawanna summer program would not be possible without the tremendous gift of time, talents, experience, energy, imagination and love of our many volunteers. Directors, Nurses, Curriculum Writers, S-I-Ts (Staff in Training) and the Camp Committee (who works year round to maintain and improve the facilities and plan for the next summer's program) each contribute to the quality of the program.

A report which recognizes our staff and volunteers has been distributed (it was three pages long and is to lengthy to include in this article). If you would like a copy of this report, please contact Lorrie Loughney at the Presbytery Office).

The campers themselves minister to each other and enhance the experience for everyone. They are lively, inquisitive and enthusiastic. They are a credit to their families and home churches.
